Rainbow Flag Ceremony/Candle Light Vigil

We here at Northern Arizona Pride Association extend our deepest condolences to the families and friends of the Orlando shooting victims. This tragedy leaves a very deep hole in our hearts and our thoughts and love go out to our brothers and sisters in the LGBTQ community.

On June 23rd at 6:30 p.m., on the grounds of Flagstaff City Hall, during the raising of our Rainbow Flag Ceremony, we will hold a candlelight vigil. During that time, we will dedicate a moment of silence to the victims who lost their lives in a space that was supposed to be welcoming and safe for them.

We welcome our community, friends, allies, supporters, and all of those wanting to pay their respects. In the face of such unimaginable sadness, tragedy, and loss we must remain united. We continue to have hope that someday these senseless acts of violence will be a thing of the past and we will be able to gather solely in celebration and no longer in tears. Until then, we must all stand strong; live our lives with more hope, more joy, and more love for one another. We must not lose our humanity, or let acts of violence harden our hearts. As Martin Luther King, Jr. so famously said, “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” It is in that spirit that we mourn the victims in Orlando. It is in that spirit that we honor their memories by standing together and living our lives out loud and unafraid. We will move forward while never forgetting the enormous loss to our community.

We want to thank the City of Flagstaff and the Flagstaff Police Department for their due diligence in insuring that our 20th annual Pride in the Pines festival will continue as a celebration of diversity, of love, and of unity in our town.
