Flagstaff Pride Bids Farewell to its Visionary Leaders, Debra Taylor and Carrie Nelson

Flagstaff, AZ – September 26, 2023 – After an exceptional journey of over 15 years, Flagstaff Pride announces President, Debra Taylor has fulfilled her term as President and will remain active with the organization as President Emeritus. Long-standing board member, Carrie Nelson, who served the organization for over 15 years has also fulfilled her term. Their remarkable dedication and unwavering commitment have played an instrumental role in shaping Flagstaff Pride into the thriving organization it is today.

During Debra Taylor and Carrie Nelson’s terms on the board of Flagstaff Pride, the organization has achieved numerous milestones, transforming the LGBTQIA2S+ community landscape in Flagstaff and beyond. Some of the notable achievements during their tenure include:

  1. Pride in the Pines Festival Growth: Taylor and Nelson oversaw the annual Pride in the Pines festival’s growth, turning it into a must-attend summer event in Flagstaff.
  2. Civil Rights Ordinance: In 2013, the City of Flagstaff passed a groundbreaking Civil Rights Ordinance, offering essential protections to the LGBTQIA2S+ community. This landmark legislation was a significant step towards inclusivity and equality.
  3. The First Rainbow Flag at City Hall: On June 25th, 2016, Flagstaff Pride made history by installing a designated flagpole for the rainbow flag at City Hall. First flying the rainbow flag to pay tribute to the victims of the Orlando PULSE shooting and highlighted the importance of solidarity and remembrance at City Hall, becoming the first city in Arizona to do so. The flagpole is symbolic to many organizations who use it throughout the year. 
  4. Visibility of Pride Flags: Flagstaff took a monumental step in 2019 by raising the Rainbow Flag for the entire month of June, marking the first city in Arizona to do so, celebrating Pride Month. In March 2021, Flagstaff Pride coordinated the flying of the transgender flag for two weeks in honor of Transgender Day of Visibility and the flag continues to fly every year.
  5. Grant Acquisition: During the last two years, Flagstaff Pride was able to successfully acquire a number of grants to support their 3 year strategic plan.
  6. Inaugural Flagstaff Pride Parade: The culmination of Flagstaff Pride’s efforts came to fruition this past June with the first-ever Flagstaff Pride parade, a momentous occasion that united the community and showcased their enduring commitment to fostering acceptance and love.

Both Debra Taylor and Carrie Nelson leave behind a legacy that is not only a testament to their hard work but also a source of inspiration for future generations. Their unwavering dedication and passion have significantly contributed to the progress of LGBTQIA2S+ rights and acceptance in Flagstaff and the state of Arizona.

Debra Taylor, President of Flagstaff Pride, stated, “Over the past 15 years, Flagstaff Pride has been my heart and soul. It’s been an incredible journey, and I am immensely proud of the progress we’ve made in advancing LGBTQIA2S+ rights and acceptance in our community. I am grateful for the support of our incredible board and the unwavering dedication of our volunteers, sponsors, mentors and all those who continue to help grow Flagstaff Pride. While my term may be ending, I remain committed to the cause and look forward to seeing Flagstaff Pride continue to flourish under new leadership.”

Carrie Nelson, Board Member of Flagstaff Pride, added, “Being a part of Flagstaff Pride has been an extremely awesome experience. I have learned a lot and am still learning. Flagstaff Pride has achieved so much together, from historic milestones to unforgettable events. This journey has reaffirmed the power of community and the importance of standing up for what is right. As I step down from my role, I am filled with a little sadness but mostly gratitude for the opportunity to contribute as an ally to the LGBTQIA2S+  cause in Flagstaff. Our work is far from over, and I have no doubt that Flagstaff Pride will continue to make strides towards a more inclusive and accepting future. I wish nothing but the BEST to the new Board members!”
